Tim Fischer Way

Tim Fischer Way is a 22km or 15-minute scenic drive connecting the towns of Lockhart and Boree Creek.

Named after former local and Deputy Prime Minister of Australia Timothy Andrew “Tim” Fischer AC.

  • Born in Lockhart
  • Tim attended Boree Creek Public School and then Melbourne’s Xavier College, where he excelled in debating, writing, and received first class honors for British history and mathematics.
  • Conscripted into the Australian Army in 1966, Tim reached the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment and served during the Vietnam War. After the war, Tim returned home and resumed farming and politics.
  • Tim was elected to the NSW State Legislative Assembly in 1971, where he served for 13 years. Federal Member for the seat of Farrer in 1984 an held for 17 years with the National Party
  • Leader of the National Party from 1990 to 1999
  • Deputy Prime Minister in the Howard Government from 1996 to 1999.
  • Chairman of Tourism Australia from 2004 to 2007
  • Ambassador to the Holy See, Vatican City, from 2009 to 2012.
  • Heavily involved in community and charity work including St Vincent de Paul Society, Fred Hollows Foundation, Autism NSW, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service
  • Companion of the Order of Australia in 2005 for his dedication to Australia through charitable work, parliamentary service, advocacy for trade and humanitarian aid.
  • An avid train enthusiast, passionate about the development of regional Australia
  • A man, full of character, who showed authenticity, decency, and courage
